Best Time to Visit Leh Ladakh

Weather, crowds and cost for Leh Ladakh, broken down by season so you can pick the right month rather than the cheapest flight.

Short answer

The best time to visit Leh Ladakh is June to September. That is when the high passes are open, roads are motorable and the lakes are reachable.

Season by season

Winter

December to February drops below minus twenty at night. Most passes close, the Manali road shuts entirely, and only flights get you in. This is the season for the Chadar trek and snow leopard spotting in Hemis.

Summer

June to August is the main window. Days are warm in the sun and cold in shade, Pangong and Tso Moriri are open, and the Srinagar and Manali highways both run.

Monsoon

Ladakh sits in a rain shadow and gets very little rain, but cloudbursts and landslides can close highway sections in July and August without warning.

Month-by-month notes

  • June - highways open, meltwater streams high, fewer crowds than July.
  • July and August - peak, warmest, and busiest on the Pangong road.
  • September - clear skies, golden apricot valleys, and the best photography light.
  • October - roads start closing; only fly-in trips make sense.

Festival and crowd calendar

The Hemis festival in June and the Ladakh Festival in September fill Leh guesthouses. Book permits and hotels before arrival in peak weeks.

What to pack

Layers for a thirty-degree daily swing, high-factor sunscreen, sunglasses for glare, and lip balm. Altitude sickness medication should be discussed with a doctor before travel.

Common questions

How long to acclimatise in Leh?

Two full days at rest in Leh before driving to any higher lake or pass. Most altitude problems come from skipping this.

Can I visit Ladakh in winter?

Yes by air, with a much smaller circuit open and serious cold.
