Government Schemes in India: How to Check If You Qualify

India runs hundreds of central and state schemes at once. The categories are stable even when individual scheme names change, so learning the structure is more useful than memorising names.

The main categories

  • Income support - direct transfers to farmers, workers and senior citizens.
  • Health cover - hospital insurance for low-income households.
  • Housing and sanitation - construction assistance in rural and urban areas.
  • Credit and enterprise - collateral-free loans for small businesses and self-employment.
  • Education - scholarships, fee waivers and skill programmes.

What eligibility usually depends on

Most schemes filter on a small number of variables: annual household income, ration card category, land holding, age, gender, caste category, and whether anyone in the household holds a government job or pays income tax. Check those first and half the list rules itself out.

Documents to keep scanned and ready

  1. Aadhaar, with the mobile number linked and active.
  2. Bank passbook first page, seeded to Aadhaar for direct transfers.
  3. Income certificate from the revenue office.
  4. Caste or category certificate where applicable.
  5. Ration card and a residence proof.

Apply only through official routes

Use the official national and state portals, or a Common Service Centre if you need help filling a form. Genuine central schemes do not charge an application fee, and no official agent asks for an OTP. Any site promising guaranteed approval for a fee is a scam.

After applying

Note the application or reference number, track status on the same portal, and keep an eye on the linked bank account, since rejections are frequently caused by a name mismatch between Aadhaar and the bank record.

Rules change with each budget, so confirm the current criteria on the official portal before you rely on any summary, including this one.
